We visited this unique little railway in the Spring of 2011, when the rapeseed was in full bloom. The railway is the lifeline of the villages it serves, with little road access,
virtually everything must travel by train. Chinese tourists from Chengdu flock to the area at weekends, and many tourist trains run, with all servicable C2 0-8-0's operating.
Along with the regular passenger trains and coal trains this can make the railway very busy. We'll also see the lower section of the line, with little electrics on coal trains,

Paton's Country Railway operates the second oldest narrow gauge Beyer-Garratt locomotive in service in the world,

The Darjeeling-Himalayan Railway is totally charming, and once out of the lower portion, so are the people, especially the children. Tipong Coal Mine is located in Northeast India, on the border with Burma, and for the moment runs the oldest
steam locomotive in regular service in the world, and a Darjeeling B class.Living on borrowed time, this 2 foot
gauge railway takes coal from the mine through the jungle to a truck loading facility. Far from tourist destinations,
this seldom visited little line is full of charm and character! As soon as they have the money, two bridges will be
rebuilt, the coal will move by truck and this delightful little railway will die. The Janakpur Railway runs from
Jayanagar, India to Janakpurdham, Nepal. This 2' 6" gauge line has now dieselized, but we rode and taped a chartered
steam train, with an 0-6-2 Hunswell Clarke side tank, built in 1930. We were only allowed to stay in Nepal for one
night because of terrorists! The festival of Rama Sita was going on in Janakpurdham during our visit, and there were
thousands of people on the station waiting for the diesel train, many of them rode on the roof and sides, and on flat

The declining sugar cane railways of Java, Indonesia, still host a wide variety of elderly, exotic colorful steam engines in both the cane fields and the mills, and also have a variety of diesel "critturs". Well, this one's a bit different. Elrond Lawrence's book "Route 66 Railway" convinced me that I should go take a look and see what was left of Route 66's artifacts. First we take a look at California, from San Bernardino, over Cajon, through Victorville to Barstow, and across the Mojave to Needles and the bridge at Topock. Then we move on to Arizona, from Kingman Canyon to Flagstaff and on to Canyon Diablo, Winslow, Holbrook and the the NM border at Lupton. In addition to the trains, you'll see amongst other things, neon, abandoned gas stations, tourist traps, restored depots and some fairly weird "attractions".
